Time in a Bottle
I've only recently started to enjoy making half square triangles, so when the theme for Time in a Bottle was announced I wasn't sure I'd participate. I considered making a mug rug for game night with a hourglass applique but since the prompt specifically said the hourglass block I wasn't sure that would work. Then when I started working on the Oh My Stars quilt I showed last month in the Tickled Pink blog hop, I realized I had a lot of bonus triangles I could use. I have a tendency to throw those bonus triangles in my scrap bin and add them to crazy blocks but I decided I'd use them to make hourglasses this time. By the time I trimmed them my hourglass was much smaller than I usually work with, but they weren't so bad to work with, until it came time for quilting. Between a needle I should have replaced and a lot of joined seams the back has some areas that don't look so great-if it were something that would be seen I'd feel the need to tear it out and redo it.
My Oh My Stars quilt is going to a coworker/friend who had a long haul case of Covid and has been in treatment since Christmas Eve but is finally making progress to recovering!!! I know from several years of working with her that she enjoys hot tea so I'll include the mug rug with her quilt; hopefully it will be a cheery spot on her desk when she returns next school year as long as the back stays faced down.
I have plans for another Oh My Stars quilt, perhaps I'll have another bonus mug run with it. First I'm going to play in my scrap bin for next month's World of Color hop. I've got a very bright project in the works for that one!

ReplyDeleteHow large are those tiny blocks? I had trouble piecing small hourglass blocks and gave up, but your blocks look even smaller than mine. All those seams were a pain for me as well. Love the colors you chose and it will be loved and used.

ReplyDeleteLots of love put into both projects. Some of my favorite mug rugs are the ones that I questioned ripping apart. I love that they have imperfections and that I can actually use them without the fear of ruining them. I love the colors and your "Oh My Stars" quilt is beautiful.

I am of firm belief that the back is the back and sometimes you just have to let it go. It's the front we see and love anyway. Everything is a learning curve and next time it will be better. Well...that's what they tell me anyway! LOL!! Love your bright and cheery quilt as well as your fun mugrug!

Saw you were in education, and as a former teacher, my heart goes out to you during these Covid changes. I just retired and miss the interactions. Keep at it. Your other star quilt is so pretty.

ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet thought for your friend. I too had a good friend on the vent from Nov 2020 to Feb 2021. She's an absolute miracle. My friends and I made her a quilt.

ReplyDeleteLove how you used up some of your excess triangles. Growing up my mom was one of those people who always looked at the back of things. It got to the point that when I made her anything I covered the back in masking tape so she couldn't see it. To this day I still don't give a hoot about the back of anything. The love that goes into the construction is all that counts.
